LTL Transport Stocks Pull Back After Amazon Expands Freight

By Dean Seal

Less-than-truckload transportation stocks are receding after Amazon said it has expanded its LTL freight service to ship to any destination.

Amazon said its expanded business will offer a more cost-effective shipping option that meets demand for selling partners and vendors. Businesses will be able to ship by pallet and share trailer space for partial loads, rather than having to reserve and pay for a full truckload.

It's a big expansion for Amazon's Supply Chain Services business, which will now let customers move freight ranging from one to six pallets, or between 150 and 15,000 pounds.

The move could take market share away from existing LTL shippers.

Old Dominion Freight Line shares fell 4% to $238.74 on Wednesday. Shares of XPO fell 3.6% to $219.47 and shares of Saia slid 1.9% to $470.08. ArcBest's stock slipped 2.9% to $168.18.
