American Express to Buy TheFork From Tripadvisor for $700 Million — Update
By Colin Kellaher
American Express has agreed to buy European online restaurant reservation and management platform TheFork from travel-site operator Tripadvisor for $700 million.
American Express on Monday said the deal bolsters the New York credit-card company's broader dining strategy, which includes the digital dining platform Resy, expanding its dining network to 75,000 bookable venues.
Tripadvisor, which earlier this year said it was exploring strategic alternatives for The Fork, said it expects the sale to give the Needham, Mass., company significant flexibility to accelerate its capital-return policy, maintain a well-capitalized balance sheet and continue investing in its experiences business.
The deal is slated to close by the end of the year.
American Express acquired Resy in 2019 and then bought reservation, table and event management technology provider Tock from Squarespace in 2024. The company earlier this year said it plans to integrate the Resy and Tock venue networks this summer under Resy.
Activist investor Starboard Value had previously agitated for Tripadvisor to explore a sale of TheFork, and to consider selling itself. Tripadvisor in March said it had struck a cooperation agreement with Starboard.
Shares of Tripadvisor were recently up 6.9% to $13.27.
