Disney, Movie-Theater Chains Point to Strong Opening Weekend for 'Toy Story 5'
By Kelly Cloonan
Disney's "Toy Story 5" had the biggest opening weekend box office performance so far this year, providing a boost for the entertainment company and several movie-theater chains.
Disney said the latest movie in the Toy Story franchise pulled in an estimated $312 million worldwide in its debut this past weekend, marking the biggest global opening of this year, and the second-largest animated debut of all time domestically behind "The Incredibles 2" from 2018.
Movie-theater chains AMC Entertainment Holdings and Cinemark Holdings similarly pointed to strong early demand for the film.
AMC said the movie's debut contributed to the company's busiest weekend of 2026 so far at its U.S. theaters, with more than 4.8 million people attending AMC locations in the U.S. and ODEON Cinemas internationally from Thursday through Sunday.
AMC recorded its highest weekend admissions revenue, food and beverage revenue and attendance levels year-to-date at its U.S. theaters as a result. In addition to "Toy Story 5," AMC pointed to strong ongoing demand for films like "Obsession," "Backrooms" and "Disclosure Day," among others currently playing in theaters.
"Seeing multiple films across multiple genres perform well at the same time is such an encouraging sign for the theatrical business," AMC Chief Executive Adam Aron said. "With several major releases coming to theaters especially in July and across the entire summer, we expect that momentum to continue."
Cinemark also recorded its top-performing box office weekend of the year, and saw its all-time biggest three-day opening weekend domestic box office for a G- or PG-rated film, with "Toy Story 5." The movie-theater chain similarly pointed to strong carryover from recent releases.
"Cinemark auditoriums were filled with fans of all ages as 'Toy Story 5' soared 'to infinity and beyond,' delivering our biggest opening weekend ever for a family film," Cinemark's CEO Sean Gamble said.
