AtkinsRealis Seeks U.S. Licensing for CANDU Reactor Technology

By Adriano Marchese

AtkinsRealis Group has formally notified U.S. nuclear regulators that intends to seek licensing for its CANDU reactor technology, beginning the process of bringing the Canadian-designed nuclear system to the U.S. market.

The Montreal-based engineering services and nuclear company said Wednesday that it has formally submitted a Notice of Intent to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The filing marks the start of the formal pre-application step with the regulator and represents a key milestone in the company's strategy to bring its nuclear technology to U.S.

Demand for electricity has been rising at breakneck speeds, particularly in the U.S., as big tech companies race to build data centers and infrastructure to power next-generation artificial intelligence and cloud computing technology.

AtkinsRealis owns the exclusive rights to the CANDU technology, a large reactor platform. The latest model, the Enhanced CANDU 6, is a 700 megawatt-class pressurized heavy-water reactor that uses natural uranium and online refuelling methods. So far, 34 CANDU units have been built globally.

The company said it is currently in talks with U.S. utilities, state governments and prospective power purchasers such as hyperscale data center operators and large industrial users, on how it could potentially tap into opportunities in the country.
