Sunrun, Renew Home and Tesla Partner to Provide 16 Gigawatts of Flexible Power Capacity
By Connor Hart
Sunrun, Renew Home and Tesla said Wednesday they have formed a partnership to provide more than 16 gigawatts of flexible energy capacity to utilities and hyperscale data center operators, drawing from batteries, thermostats and other connected devices.
The companies on Wednesday said the agreement will establish a framework to aggregate millions of demand-side and energy-exporting devices into local energy resources that can be deployed without additional hardware, software, interconnection, water or land use.
The combined network would be capable of shifting household electricity demand and dispatching power from home batteries during periods of peak grid stress, they said.
The partnership would create what the companies called "the largest distributed power plant in the country," sourcing capacity from hundreds of thousands of home battery systems operated by Sunrun and Tesla, as well as more than 8 million smart thermostats and connected devices managed by Renew Home.
Shares of Sunrun jumped 19%, to $15.30, in premarket trading. Tesla's stock, meanwhile, was largely flat.
Sunrun, Renew Home and Tesla said they already have more than 300 megawatts of capacity available for deployment in Virginia, a major data-center market. They expect that figure to grow to at least 500 megawatts by 2030, as installations of home batteries and smart thermostats ramp up.
