Land Rover Recalling More Than 250,000 Vehicles in U.S. Over Air-Bag Risk

Jaguar Land Rover's North American arm is recalling more than 250,000 Defender, Discovery and Range Rover models over the risk that air bags won't deploy.

The British automotive manufacturer, which has been part of Tata Motors since 2008, is recalling certain 2020 to 2026 Land Rover Defender, 2021 to 2026 Discovery and 2022 to 2026 Range Rover vehicles, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

The department in a notice said the driver's air-bag clockspring connector in these vehicles may corrode, which can cause the air bag not to deploy as intended. The number of vehicles that could be affected totals 250,857.

Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed Aug. 7, and additional letters will be sent once a final remedy is available, NHTSA said. Dealers will apply a protective lubricant gel to the driver's air-bag connector terminals, free of charge, it said.

The decision to issue a recall followed an increase in increase in warranty claims related to the illumination of the air-bag warning lamp, NHTSA said. The safety report found no claims or field reports were received of air bag not deploying in the U.S., and there have been no reported accidents, injuries or fires in the U.S. as a result of the issue.
