Telesat Wins Contract to Supply Arctic Satellite Connectivity for Canadian Military
By Adriano Marchese
Telesat's Lightspeed satellite network has been selected by the Canadian military to provide secure communications for the armed forces in the Arctic circle.
The Canadian satellite operator on Wednesday said that it has reached an agreement in principle with Canada's Defence Investment Agency for Telesat Lightspeed services to deliver secure Military Ka-band Arctic connectivity to the Canadian Armed Forces.
The agreement builds on an earlier strategic partnership between the agency, Telesat and satellite manufacturer MDA Space for the Enhanced Satellite Communications Project-Polar program.
I recent months, Canada has significantly accelerated its national defense spending as part of a long-term strategy to modernize its capabilities and to meet its NATO spending requirement. Part of the country's focus is also on bolstering its sovereignty over the Arctic region.
The agreement still needs to be penned and signed into a definitive contract by all parties, which Telesat said is expected to happen in the next few weeks.
