Deere Reaches Agreement With FTC on Lawsuit Alleging Anticompetitive Practices Over Equipment Repair Services

By Kelly Cloonan

Deere said it reached an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission and five states over a lawsuit that alleged the company gained a monopoly in the market for certain repair services for its agricultural equipment.

Under the agreement, Deere will give access to diagnostic and repair tools for its equipment to farmers, ranchers and independent service technicians, the Moline, Ill. company said Wednesday.

The agreement resolves a lawsuit filed by the FTC and several states last year, which said Deere had stifled competition for repairing and maintaining its equipment by limiting access to a certain software repair tool to its network of authorized dealers. The FTC said that limited access drove up repair costs for farmers, and boosted Deere's profits on agricultural equipment and parts.

Deere said the agreement is part of its efforts to offer more flexible repair options, and that it will continue to invest in tools, technology and services that give customers more options to repair their equipment.
