Micron Boosts Expected AI Spending to $250 Billion Through 2035
By Dean Seal
Micron Technology has raised its expected spending on chip manufacturing in the U.S. to $250 billion through 2035.
The semiconductor company said Thursday it is accelerating its investments to meet surging demand for memory in the era of artificial intelligence.
The ramp-up comes as construction kicks off for Micron's upcoming facility in Clay, N.Y., which is underway a full quarter ahead of schedule.
Micron said it is also planning to invest up to $3 billion to develop a domestic semiconductor supply chain ecosystem to support its manufacturing plans in the U.S.
As part of the planned investment, Micron intends to provide GlobalWafers with $500 million in strategic financing support to advance the capabilities of the Taiwanese semiconductor company's silicon wafer manufacturing facility in Sherman, Texas.
The two companies will enter into a 10-year supply agreement that will provide Micron with access to significant raw silicon wafer capacity.
Micron shares rose 6.8% to $1,013 ahead of the opening bell.
