European Defense Groups Agree to Work on Ballistic Missile Shield

By Mauro Orru

Several European defense companies have agreed to work together to develop a system against medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

Airbus, Thales, Safran, Destinus and MBDA--a joint venture of Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo--said they had signed a letter of intent to establish a consortium to develop an exo-atmospheric interceptor system. The companies plan to enter into a binding agreement within three months.

Engineering works are expected to start in August, and the consortium plans to conduct a test in space next year.
