Wesfarmers to Spend Up to US$500 Million on Lithium Mine Expansion

By Stuart Condie

SYDNEY--Australian retail and industrial conglomerate Wesfarmers said it will spend up to US$500 million expanding a lithium mine and concentrator in the west of the country.

ASX-listed Wesfarmers on Wednesday said that it and joint-venture partner SQM had approved the final investment decision for the Mt Holland project expansion in Western Australia state.

Wesfarmers said it expected to contribute between 645 million Australian dollars (US$450 million) and A$715 million in capital expenditure, funded from existing cash and debt facilities.

The expansion will double annual output of spodumene concentrate from 380,000 metric tons currently, Wesfarmers said.

Wesfarmers expects work to begin in the second half of 2027 and first production in the first half of 2030.
