America Movil 2Q Profit Rises Amid Revenue Gains

MEXICO CITY--Telecommunications company America Movil posted a 9.2% increase in second-quarter net profit on higher revenue and operating gains.
The company reported profit of 24.33 billion Mexican pesos ($1.4 billion) for the April-June quarter, up from MXN22.28 billion in the year-earlier period. Profit was equivalent to MXN0.40 a share or $0.47 an American depositary receipt.
Revenue grew by 3.1% to MXN241.07 billion, with service revenue up 3.4%. In constant currency terms, service revenue was up by 5.1%. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose 3.8% to MXN95.91 billion and was up 5.3% at constant exchange rates. Operating profit rose 9.5% to MXN51.81 billion.
Financial costs increased by a third to MXN10.42 billion, largely on smaller foreign exchange gains than in the year-earlier quarter.
America Movil, which has operations across Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as in Austria and Eastern Europe, lost 158,000 mobile subscribers in the second quarter, ending June with 334.4 million. Postpaid mobile subscriptions increased by 3.5 million, led by Brazil with 1.5 million, Colombia with 250,000 and Peru with 173,000, while the company canceled around 3.7 million prepaid lines mostly in Colombia and Argentina..
Fixed-line subscriptions increased by 513,000 to 80.2 million, of which 37.8 million were for broadband service.
