EnerSys Awarded Revised Energy Department Grant for $150 Million
By Grace Yoon
EnerSys said it was awarded a revised grant from the U.S. Energy Department of $150 million for the development of its lithium cell manufacturing facility in Greenville, South Carolina.
The industrial stored energy solutions company said the award brings total net investment for the facility to approximately $500 million. EnerSys has also been awarded a comprehensive incentive package through South Carolina and Greenville County of approximately $200 million.
The company said it expects the facility to have an initial production capacity of approximately 1 gigawatt hour to meet the specialized requirements of defense applications.
Chief Executive Shawn O'Connell said by dedicating the Greenville facility to lithium cell development and manufacturing, the company would strengthen a secure and domestically sourced supply chain aligned with evolving U.S. security requirements.
Artificial intelligence investments are boosting demand for lithium, which help power data centers, electric vehicles and portable electronics.
EnerSys said it anticipates beginning construction in the first half of fiscal 2028.
