HSBC to Sell Singapore Insurance Business to Allianz for $2.1 Billion

By P.R. Venkat

HSBC Holdings has agreed to sell its Singapore life and health insurance business to Allianz for $2.1 billion, as the U.K.-based lender reshapes its portfolio to focus on core markets and businesses.

The sale is expected to generate a pre-tax gain of about $1.8 billion at the HSBC Group consolidated level, the bank said Friday.

Upon completion, HSBC and Allianz will enter into an exclusive 15-year bancassurance partnership that would allow HSBC to continue distributing insurance products to its Singapore customers.

HSBC would receive an initial lump-sum cash payment of $200 million as part of the agreement.

"The transaction forms part of the ongoing simplification of the HSBC Group as it focuses on increasing leadership and market share in the areas where it has a clear competitive advantage and the greatest opportunities to grow and support its clients," HSBC said.

The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals.
