Eni to Partner With TotalEnergies on Cyprus Gas Field in Boost for European Energy

By Adam Whittaker

Italy's Eni and France's TotalEnergies plan to develop a gas field in Cyprus, proceeding with the offshore project as conflict in the Middle East pushes companies to explore other opportunities.

The companies said Tuesday that they have taken the final investment decision on the deep-water offshore project in the Cronos field. First gas is expected in 2028.

The gas is primarily destined for Europe, which has been left searching for alternate supplies in recent years after weaning itself off Russian gas following the country's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The conflict in the Middle East, which closed the Strait of Hormuz, has once again highlighted the continent's dependence on imported energy.

The field has more than 3 trillion cubic feet of gas initially in place, with production expected to reach a plateau of 500 million standard cubic feet a day.

Gas will be transported to Egypt before being liquefied in Damietta LNG plant on the country's Mediterranean coast.
