By Nina Kienle
Anglo American spinoff Valterra Platinum posted a jump in adjusted earnings on higher production and sales volumes.
The platinum group metals mining company said Wednesday that headline earnings--which strip out exceptional and other one-off items--for the first six months of the year soared to 21.5 billion South African rand ($1.29 billion) from 1.2 billion rand in the prior year period. On a per share basis, headline earnings jumped to 82.02 rand from 4.73 rand the year before.
The group had anticipated headline earnings between 18.5 billion and 22.2 billion rand, and headline EPS of 70.47 to 84.56 rand.
Platinum group metals sales volumes rose 18%, the company said.
Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose to 33.4 billion rand from 6.6 billion rand.
Refined platinum group metals production rose 25% on higher metal-in-concentrate production and inventory. Own-mined production rose 9% on improved operations at the Amandelbult mine, Valterra said.
The group backed its metal-in-concentrate and refined production guidance for the year.
