Generali Posts Higher Profit on Growth Across Businesses

By Adria Calatayud

Italy's Assicurazioni Generali reported a higher net profit for the first half, with earnings growing across its three business, and launched a 500 million-euro ($577.7 million) share buyback.

The insurer said Thursday that net profit was 2.54 billion euros, up 18% on the year-earlier period. Analysts had forecast 2.36 billion euros, according to consensus estimates provided by the company.

Generali said its operating result rose 11% to 4.505 billion euros, beating consensus expectations of 4.38 billion euros. The insurer said all three business segments--life, property and casualty, and asset and wealth management--contributed to the increase.

Gross written premiums increased 5.8% to 53.42 billion euros, ahead of consensus estimates of 53.04 billion euros.

The insurer said its life business recorded net inflows of 8.3 billion euros, which it called a record performance for a half year.

Generali said it would launch a buyback program for a maximum of 500 million euros, which is in line with the capital-management policy of its 2025-27 business plan.

The group remains fully committed to the targets of its plan, Generali Chief Executive Philippe Donnet said.
