Zoetis Gets FDA Emergency-Use Approval for Screwworm in Dogs
By Dean Seal
The Food and Drug Administration said it has granted emergency-use authorization to Zoetis for a drug that treats New World screwworm infestations in dogs and puppies.
The regulator said the authorization is for Zoetis's Simparica TRIO. The chewable tablets have already been approved by the FDA for heartworm, flea, and tick-related indications in dogs and puppies.
While most dogs in the U.S. are at low risk of exposure to New World screwworm exposure due to their geographic location, dogs that live in or travel to areas where infestations have been identified by health officials should be closely monitored, the FDA said.
There have recently been detections of New World screwworm in Texas and New Mexico, the FDA said. It has concluded that Simparica TRIO could be effective in treating the infestations in dogs and puppies when used as authorized.
"The best thing dog owners can do right now is stay aware of the situation, know the signs of infestation, and have a conversation with their veterinarian if they have concerns," said Timothy Schell, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine.
Zoetis shares rose 2.6% to $75.47 ahead of the closing bell.
