Mitsubishi Electric to Buy U.S. Software Firm for $1.4 Billion

By Fabiana Negrin Ochoa

Mitsubishi Electric has agreed to pay $1.4 billion for a U.S.-based provider of energy-management software, as market volatility heightens the need to optimize power usage.

The Japanese company disclosed the deal on Thursday, saying it had reached an agreement to acquire PCI Energy Solutions, a privately held firm based in Oklahama that specializes in helping enterprises manage energy use more efficiently.

According to Mitsubishi Electric, about 60% of power generation in the U.S. is managed by the PCI platform.

The transaction is expected to close this year, and will see PCI become a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Electric.

Laying out the rationale for the acquisition, Mitsubishi Electric said that volatility in power markets is driving a shift in customer needs from improving the energy efficiency of individual equipment to optimizing overall utilization. In that context, integrating PCI's technology and expertise can strengthen the company's energy-solutions business, it said.

Combining customer bases and sales channels is also expected to accelerate growth, Mitsubishi Electric said.

Mitsubishi Electric manufactures electrical and electronic equipment and systems across a broad range of sectors.
