Box Reports Higher 2Q Profit, Says FX Will Weigh on Full-Year Results

By Elias Schisgall

Box reported a higher second-quarter profit and lifted its full-year revenue guidance, but cut its guidance for adjusted earnings, citing share dilution and foreign exchange headwinds.

The cloud-storage company on Tuesday reported a profit of $19.2 million, or 9 cents a share. That compares with a profit of $13.4 million, or 5 cents a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-time items, Box posted adjusted earnings of 40 cents a share, in line with the expectations of analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue rose to $321.1 million, up from $294 million a year prior and ahead of analyst expectations for $319.3 million.

Box reported remaining performance obligations rising 15% to $1.7 billion.

The company lifted its full-year revenue forecast to $1.29 billion, up from a previous view of $1.28 billion. But it cut its guidance for full-year adjusted earnings to $1.54 a share, down from $1.56.

Analysts are expecting full-year adjusted earnings of $1.58 a share on $1.28 billion in revenue.

Box cited expected share dilution and headwinds from foreign exchange rates as the reason for the guidance cut. The majority of Box's international revenue comes in Japanese yen, which has weakened against the dollar this year.

For the current third quarter, the company guided for adjusted earnings of 39 cents a share and revenue of around $329 million.

Analysts are expecting adjusted earnings of 39 cents a share on $324.7 million in revenue.
