Boston Scientific Says Cyberattack Disrupting Global Operations
By Colin Kellaher
Boston Scientific has been hit with a cyberattack that has resulted in a global disruption to the medical-technology company's operations.
Boston Scientific on Wednesday said the hack, which is affecting some of its information-technology systems, has caused disruptions and limitations of access to certain information systems and business applications that support aspects of its operations, including its ability to process and ship customer orders.
The Marlborough, Mass., company said it doesn't yet know the full scope and nature of the breach, including its operational and financial impacts, and that it hasn't yet determined whether the incident is reasonably likely to have a material impact.
Boston Scientific said it is working with cybersecurity experts to assess and contain the threat and to restore affected functions and systems access, but that it doesn't yet have a timeline for a full restoration.
The Boston Scientific breach comes amid an increase in hacking activity worldwide.
Organizations faced an average 2,336 cyberattacks a week in July, according to a recent report from cyber-threat intelligence provider Check Point Research, up nearly 14% since May.
Medical-technology company Medtronic in April said it was hit with a cyberattack that resulted in unauthorized access to some of its information-technology systems. And in March, medical-device maker Stryker was hit by a major cyberattack that disabled the cellphones and laptops of thousands of employees, with the hackers behind the assault saying they were retaliating on behalf of Iran.
