Boston Scientific Says Cyberattack Disrupting Global Operations — Update
By Colin Kellaher
Boston Scientific has been hit with a cyberattack that is hampering the medical-technology company's ability to fill orders.
Boston Scientific on Wednesday said the hack, which is affecting some of its information-technology systems, has caused global disruptions and limitations of access to certain information systems and business applications that support aspects of its operations, including its ability to process and ship customer orders.
The Marlborough, Mass., company said it doesn't yet know the full scope and nature of the breach, including its operational and financial impacts, and that it hasn't yet determined whether the incident is reasonably likely to have a material impact.
Boston Scientific said it is working with cybersecurity experts to assess and contain the threat and to restore affected functions and systems access, but that it doesn't yet have a timeline for a full restoration.
The Boston Scientific breach comes amid an increase in hacking activity worldwide.
Organizations faced an average 2,336 cyberattacks a week in July, according to a recent report from cyber-threat intelligence provider Check Point Research, up nearly 14% since May.
Exposure to generative artificial intelligence, of GenAI, has become a clearer operational risk, Check Point said, noting that organizations use an average of eight AI tools, and that one in 36 prompts carry a high risk of sensitive data exposure.
Healthcare companies have been a frequent target of cyberattacks this year.
Medical-technology company Medtronic in April said a hack resulted in unauthorized access to some of its information-technology systems, while medical-device maker Stryker in March was hit by a major cyberattack that disabled the cellphones and laptops of thousands of employees, with the hackers behind the assault saying they were retaliating on behalf of Iran.
More broadly, Coca-Cola in July temporarily suspended production at its Fairlife dairy business due to a ransomware attack, and Hasbro was hit with a cyberattack that prompted the toy maker to take some systems offline and resulted in a $25 million revenue hit in the second quarter.
Shares of Boston Scientific were recently down 3.3% at $48.20 in premarket trading.
