BWX Technologies, Radiant, Westinghouse Selected for Army's Nuclear Energy Initiative

By Kelly Cloonan

The U.S. Army selected BWX Technologies, Radiant and Westinghouse Government Services to provide microreactors for its nuclear energy initiative.

The companies, which disclosed the awards in separate releases on Wednesday, said the work will support the Army's Janus program. The initiative aims to provide reliable, resilient energy for national defense missions and critical infrastructure.

Under its contract, BWX Technologies will deploy its advanced nuclear reactor at Fort Campbell, Ky. The company said it expects to support the Janus program under a phased contracting approach, working on final site selection and other areas in the first phase. The company aims to break ground on site construction in late 2028, with reactor operations starting in the early 2030s.

Radiant, meanwhile, said it entered a binding agreement totaling up to $750 million to develop and deploy 15 nuclear microreactors through the Janus program. The award is the largest within the Janus program, Radiant said.

Westinghouse also said its microreactor was selected for the program. The company expects to be paired with one of nine military installations currently under consideration for microreactor technologies.
