German Utility E.ON's Ovo Energy Buy Probed by U.K. Regulator
By Ian Walker
The U.K. Competition and Markets Authority said it opened an investigation into E.ON's planned acquisition of Ovo Energy to see if it reduces competition within its markets.
The regulator said Wednesday it was launching the investigation to look at whether the deal would "result in a substantial lessening of competition within any market or markets in the United Kingdom for goods or services."
It set a deadline of Oct. 28 for its initial decision.
The regulator invited comments from interested parties on July 8 as part of its information gathering process, but at that time said it hadn't launched a formal investigation into the deal.
German utility group E.ON announced its plan to buy rival Ovo Energy for an undisclosed sum in May.
