BWX Technologies Gets U.S. Government Contract to Design Lithium Processing Module
By Katherine Hamilton
BWX Technologies received a contract award from the federal government to deliver a conceptual design for the first module of a new lithium processing facility.
The lithium facility is to be constructed at the Y-12 National Security Complex, a plant used for making and storing nuclear weapons, BWX said Thursday.
Under the contract, the Energy Department's National Nuclear Security Administration will evaluate BWX's conceptual design alongside one other company's design. The evaluation phase will take four months and includes a $4 million contract.
The government will then choose one of the two companies to complete the design. That will be followed by contract negotiations for construction of the module with one qualified developer team.
BWX is working with Edgewater Technical Associates, Evans General Contractors, Process Engineering Associates and Merrick & Co. on the project.
