Truckmaker Volvo to Build Battery Storage, Testing Site Near Cell Production Plant in Sweden
By Dominic Chopping
STOCKHOLM--Volvo plans to build a large-scale battery storage facility and test site for new energy solutions near the cell production plant it is developing in Sweden.
The Swedish truck maker has begun the planning process to build a facility for the production of battery cells in Mariestad, southern Sweden, with production expected to begin after 2030.
As part of the Mariestad expansion process, it now plans to develop an energy park that could initially provide around 70 megawatts of battery storage capacity, making it one of the largest energy parks in Sweden, Volvo said Thursday.
"The battery storage facility will support grid stability in the region, while the future test bed will enable the development and testing of new energy solutions," it said in a statement.
The company said that together with its existing powertrain plant in nearby Skovde, the battery cell plant and energy park would strengthen Volvo's industrial and logistics cluster in the region and create opportunities for shared infrastructure and capabilities.
