By Kosaku Narioka

GO Inc. and Waymo are planning to start commercial unmanned taxi services in Tokyo in 2027.

The Japanese ride-hailing app operator said Tuesday that it agreed with Waymo, the autonomous taxi company owned by Google's parent, Alphabet, to work toward providing unmanned taxi services to the general public.

GO and Waymo have been conducting on-road validation in Tokyo since 2025 to adapt Waymo's autonomous driving technology to the Japanese capital's complex road environment, the Japanese company said.

GO, founded as a subsidiary of major Japanese taxi operator Nihon Kotsu in 1977, listed in Tokyo in June.

The company's major shareholders include Japanese internet company DeNA, the mobile unit of NTT and Toyota Motor in addition to Nihon Kotsu.
