Italian Antitrust Probes Intesa Sanpaolo's Bid for Monte dei Paschi
By Mauro Orru
Italy's competition watchdog said it had launched an investigation into Intesa Sanpaolo's $35 billion bid for Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena.
The Italian Competition Authority said it wanted to assess how a potential deal could affect competition across the country's banking and insurance markets.
Intesa and Monte dei Paschi didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
Monte dei Paschi in June became the target of a cash-and-stock bid from Intesa. Monte dei Paschi said last month that it was weighing options to preserve its integrity.
