BYD Recalls More Than 183,000 Cars in China Over Brake-Pedal Risk

BYD will recall more than 183,000 vehicles in China over brake-pedal safety risks, the country's market regulator said.

The Chinese auto giant is recalling 183,211 Tang and Qin series vehicles, including the Tang series of electric and hybrid cars that were produced as early as 2015. The recall also covers 40,316 Qin series vehicles made between 2014 and 2019.

The recall is due to a manufacturing issue that could cause the brake-pedal stopper pad to crack or break after a long period of use, China's State Administration for Market Regulation said Friday.

"In extreme cases, the pad could detach, causing the brake lights to remain illuminated even when the brake pedal isn't depressed," potentially misleading other road users and posing a safety hazard, the SAMR said.

BYD will replace the affected component for free through authorized dealers, according to the statement.
