Swiss Chocolatier Lindt Puts Dubai Flagship Plans on Ice Amid War Jitters
By Najat Kantouar
Lindt & Spruengli has suspended its plans to open a flagship site in Dubai, citing concerns over conflict in the region.
The Swiss chocolate company said Tuesday that it had decided to pause a plan for a Lindt "World of Chocolate" project in the Gulf emirate for the time being, in light of the "current geopolitical situation."
In February, Executive Chairman Ernst Tanner told Swiss daily Blick that he had agreed with the government of Dubai to open a flagship museum-cum-retail-store in Dubai.
The emirate, along with other Gulf states including Qatar and Bahrain, has been targeted by Iran as part of its war with the U.S. and Israel that escalated just days after Tanner's comments were published. Missile and drone attacks on infrastructure have clouded Dubai's image as a secure haven in an often turbulent region.
A spokesperson for the company said Dubai nevertheless remained a significant market for Lindt, and that the company sees long-term potential in the state and the wider region.
"We will continue to monitor developments and reassess opportunities as circumstances evolve," the spokesperson said.
