GE Vernova to Service Gas Turbines, Extend Lifespan at Egyptian Power Plants — Update

By Kelly Cloonan

GE Vernova signed a contract with affiliates of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company to provide rotor life extension solutions for five of its gas turbines at power plants in Egypt.

Under the agreement, GE Vernova expects to help extend the operating life of the gas turbines by 13 to 15 years, the energy company said Wednesday. The company plans to provide the services under the contract between 2028 and 2035.

The deal covers five gas turbines at the Kureimat, Nubaria and Cairo North stations, representing a total capacity of about 1,250 megawatts.

Gas turbine rotors, a key part of power plants, require scheduled maintenance. The contract aims to support the overall rotor lifecycle by using GE Vernova's expertise to determine the full residual life of components, the company said.

The agreement builds on a separate deal announced earlier this year, when GE Vernova secured an order to upgrade equipment and provide long-term maintenance at Egypt's Banha and Nubaria power plants to modernize infrastructure and drive greater efficiency in electricity generation.

GE Vernova supplies more than 60 gas and steam turbines in Egypt, accounting for about 10 gigawatts of total power capacity.

Gas turbines are in hot demand as a way to provide reliable electricity, especially for power-hungry data centers. Utilities and tech giants are locking in orders for years from now, while the cost of new gas power plants has surged largely due to turbines becoming more expensive, The Wall Street Journal previously reported.
