Navy Awards HII $5 Billion Contract to Overhaul USS Harry S. Truman
By Katherine Hamilton
Huntington Ingalls Industries was awarded a $5.1 billion contract for the refueling and complex overhaul of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.
The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the total value to more than $5.18 billion.
Refueling and complex overhaul represent nearly a third of all maintenance and modernization in an aircraft carrier's service life.
The contract will include refueling the ship's reactors, as well as extensive modernization work in thousands of compartments, tanks and most ship systems. Major upgrades will also be made in the propulsion plant and combat systems.
The USS Harry S. Truman was christened in 1996 and delivered to the Navy in 1998.
It will be the eighth Nimitz-class carrier to undergo refueling and complex overhaul at HII's Newport News, Va., shipbuilding division.
