Constellation and Amazon Sign $3 Billion Deal to Upgrade Maryland Energy Plant
By Katherine Hamilton
Constellation Energy and Amazon signed a $3 billion deal to invest in and expand a nuclear plant in Maryland.
The companies plan to invest in infrastructure at the 1,790-megawatt Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center. They also aim to add 190 megawatts of new, emissions-free generating capacity, which is scheduled to come online between 2030 and 2032, the companies said Wednesday.
The agreement spans 20 years and includes a total of 690 megawatts of power. Amazon's commitment will help provide Constellation with revenue to relicense the plant for another 20 years and make progress toward developing new clean-energy power plants at the site.
The companies also entered into a related retail-supply agreement to support Amazon operations in the market of the PJM Interconnection, a power grid operator that spans 13 states and Washington, D.C. The deal is meant to help Amazon manage energy costs for facilities throughout the region.
The plant is located in Lusby, Md., on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It produces about 80% of Maryland's clean energy and enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 1.3 million homes.
