Jera, Dell Team Up for $15 Billion AI Infrastructure Project in Japan

By Kimberley Kao

Japan's Jera, Dell Technologies and U.K.-based infrastructure firm Rhaelm are teaming up on an artificial-intelligence infrastructure project that could cost more than $15 billion to develop.

The three companies signed an agreement to develop a standardized framework to accelerate AI infrastructure on a national scale in Japan, the country's largest power-generation company said in a statement Thursday.

The framework will initially be deployed at a project in Chiba, Japan, for which Apollo Global Management plans to serve as a strategic investment and financing partner for Rhaelm, according to the statement.

Total capital deployment for the Chiba Project is expected to exceed $15 billion across all phases of development spanning land, power infrastructure, facility construction and AI compute.

Operations are expected to begin around 2028, and the project will be supported by power capacity of up to 400 megawatts.

The project is set to be the largest single-site AI infrastructure in Japan, Jera said, adding that it is one of the largest in Asia based on current standards.

Jera and Rhaelm also intend to explore rolling out the framework at other Jera sites, and plan to support multigigawatt AI infrastructure capacity across Japan in the 2030s.
