Comcast's Plan to Split in Two Is a Step Forward as Broadband Competition Remains Intense

Comcast’s core cable business faces increased pressure from fixed-wireless offerings, which have proven viable broadband alternatives, and from fiber network expansion. Adjusting to this competitive reality has been painful, and we don't expect a turnaround anytime soon. Still, this business should remain a reliable cash generator. With the media business in flux, we aren't optimistic about NBC and Peacock. But we expect Comcast's decision to spin this business off will create an opportunity to combine it with a larger firm to gain needed scale.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

Comcast’s cable networks provide a platform to easily meet customers’ growing bandwidth demands, which should allow for relatively stable market share, ensuring that recurring revenue and cash flow remain strong.

Bears

Comcast’s reputation for customer service is poor at best. Its broadband customers are steadily switching internet providers as fixed-wireless and fiber alternatives become available.

Company Profile

Comcast is made up of three parts. The core cable business owns networks that provide television, internet access, and phone services to 65 million US homes and businesses, or nearly half of the country. The firm provides services to about half the locations in this territory. Comcast acquired NBCUniversal from General Electric in 2011. Following the spinoff of several cable networks, including CNBC, MSNBC, and USA, NBCU now consists of the NBC network, several local NBC affiliates, Bravo, the Peacock streaming platform, Universal Studios, and several theme parks. Finally, Sky, acquired in 2018, is a large television provider in the UK and Italy.
