Stock Market Update for the Trading Week Ended Jan. 16

  • The Morningstar US Market Index fell 0.25%.
  • The best-performing sectors were consumer defensives, up 3.7%, and real estate, up 3.64%.
  • The worst-performing sectors were financial services, down 2.09%, and communication services, down 1.98%.
  • Large-cap stocks fell 0.69%, mid-cap stocks rose 0.77%, and small-cap stocks rose 1.28%.
  • Growth stocks gained 0.66%, blend stocks gained 0.08%, and value stocks rose 0.38%.
  • The S&P 500 fell 0.38% and the Nasdaq fell 0.66%.
  • Of the 838 US-listed companies covered by Morningstar, 436, or 52%, were up, two were unchanged, and 400, or 48%, were down.

Bonds and Commodities

  • Yields on 10-year US Treasury notes rose to 4.24% from 4.18%.
  • Yields on two-year US Treasury notes rose to 3.59% from 3.54%.
  • West Texas Intermediate crude prices rose 0.88% to $59.30 per barrel.
  • Comex Gold prices rose 2.62% to $4,590.00.

Top Stock Gainers

Moderna MRNA, Venture Global VG, Intellia Therapeutics NTLA, Roblox RBLX and Millicom International Cellular TIGO were the top performers among US-listed stocks covered by Morningstar analysts.

  • Moderna topped the list, rising 21.97%. The stock closed the week at $41.83, trading at a 26% discount to its fair value estimate of $53.00 per share.
  • Venture was the second-best performer, with a weekly return of 21.72%. Venture stock wrapped up the week at $8.80, trading at a 28% discount to its fair value estimate of $11.00 per share.
  • Intellia ranked third for the week, with its stock rising 20.48%. Intellia stock closed at $12.50, trading at a 56% discount to its fair value estimate of $27.00 per share.
  • The fourth-best-performing stock was narrow-moat Roblox, which gained 19.12%. Roblox finished the week at $87.28, trading at a 30% premium to its fair value estimate of $65.00 per share.
  • Millicom stock climbed 17.07% in the latest week. The 3-star stock ended the week at $58.71, trading at an 8% premium to its fair value estimate of $52.00 per share.

Top Stock Losers

Atlassian TEAM, Trip.com Group TCOM, Docusign DOCU, Wix.com WIX, and HubSpot HUBS did the worst among US-listed stocks covered by Morningstar analysts.

  • Atlassian was the worst-performing stock of the week, falling 19.03%. The stock ended the week at $118.55, trading at a 44% discount to its fair value estimate of $230.00 per share.
  • Trip.com took the second spot, with a 18.36% price decline this week. Closing at $61.77, the stock trades at a 12% discount to its fair value estimate of $70.00 per share.
  • Docusign came in third, experiencing a 17.58% drop this week. The stock finished the week at $56.71, trading at a 34% discount to its fair value estimate of $90.00 per share.
  • Next up is Wix.com, which saw its stock price fall by 16.36% this week. At $80.16, the stock trades at a 41% discount to its fair value estimate of $143.00 per share.
  • HubSpot rounds out the list with a 16.06% decline this week. The stock closed the week at $311.88, trading at a 49% discount to to its fair value estimate of $650.00 per share.
